Each room has different architectural features but designer tricks can make small rooms appear larger. By allowing as much natural light to enter the room as possible and using artificial light freely will help to keep things bright creating a spacious look. Placing lamps will bounce the light off the ceiling and reflect it back into the room. Another way is the use of mirrors, if possible using a space on the wall from ceiling to the floor. Furniture made of glass reveal much floor space. To help keep the space open and free, furniture with longer legs is recommended.

Everything small is hip these days, just check out the iPod Nano if you don’t believe me. This also pertains to home decorating since those dainty and small condo units are getting their fair share attention. Chandeliers are supposed to look grand and…well…big. Nowadays, we need to scrimp on space and the old idea of the large chandelier on top of the piano is no longer that possible.

Welcome the mini chandelier.

Since these are small, they’re usually made up of lesser materials like aluminum or hollow. This however makes them easier to install and makes them cost effective as well.

It used to be that TVs are bulky things that take up a chunk of space in your living room, now with the introduction of LCD and Plasma screens, those days are coming to an end.

However, this presents a new challenge to interior design artists: how do you make something like a TV look design-worthy on a living room wall? Most people still see these plasma on the wall designs as an irritation to the eyes. That is until this article suggested the Italia Television Panel:

These contemporary tv stands panels surround the screen in a multitude of colors such as dark oak tv stands and an attractive ash grey, which integrate the technology into the home.

Smooth and sleek, the panels are used on screens of various sizes and if the television is no more than 10 centimeters can be mounted to be flush with the panel creating a smooth surface.

Even if you find yourself with a television more than 10cm in depth the effect of the wall panels is attractive and desirable.

High ceilings tend to have a dulling effect of lighting for the ones you have on the ceiling rarely have the power to illuminate the whole space. For these types of spaces, it may be necessary to light from both above and below to create ample lighting that can easily be achieved by mood lights on the floor or at mid-level then from the ceiling to give ample light to illuminate the whole space. Mood lighting on the roof can also be applied for effect, crisscrossing on the rafters if they show, accented by hanging chandeliers to illuminate and take full advantage of the high ceiling space where they fit with almost any ceiling type.

High and flat walls are often a pain if you don’t have the slightest clue on what to do to make the space look a bit more homey as they say. Leave them bare and you have a lot of plain colored walls that works best for minimalistic home styles but can be rather bland for lively people with a necessary style to match. Dressing them up may be easier if you could get a stylist to give you an idea and I’ll assure you, you get you’re money’s worth when the finished product is seen and for you to behold.

tasklights2Lighting is one of the ways where wisdom and artistry can be applied for a home and they basically come in three types according to decorators, ambient, task and general lighting. One of the best ways to liven up a room is by adding a focal point on which everything revolves around on. Focal points allow the room to have a solid feel, but cozy and inviting. Examples of focal points can be a fireplace or a set of photos hung on the wall, a couch or bed, an armoire (a large closet), a work of art like a painting or sculpture, a window with a view, and the like. A focal point is always the highlight of the room, and everything else simply supports it, allowing for a balance to emerge. This will also prevent you from overloading a room with too much display or designs, which only serve to give the space a heavy atmosphere, cluttered even, which just makes it look stuffy.

windowsSome well placed mirrors would greatly benefit your kitchen by bringing in much needed light you might have to compensate for with electrical lighting. Some experts even use them to make small spaces look larger by creating the illusion of space. Mirrors are great reflectors of sunlight so when you get down and decide to renovate your kitchen or other interior spaces, tell your designer to include some of them to improve the lighting characteristics of your space.
Small drab rooms can be given new light with larger windows that brings in more fresh air and light saving you a lot especially during the daytime when you would otherwise have a light or two open for illumination. Sky-lights are also nice but tend to be problematic when it comes to leaks and other waterproofing issues. you can also select lighter shades of color for your paint to get more light to play into the room, it also makes it look larger.
